Fixed Mobile Convergence

Link copied to clipboard

Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) is a telecom solution that allows customers to use their smartphones for business communication – with the same functionality they expect from a desk phone. To support FMC, service providers connect their mobile networks to voice platforms like PortaSwitch, integrating mobile and VoIP services into a single offering.

Who is FMC for?

FMC is especially relevant if you are:

  • A mobile operator (e.g., an MVNO) looking to offer business telephony services to enterprise customers.
  • A VoIP or UCaaS provider seeking to add mobile connectivity by integrating with a mobile operator that supports SIM/eSIM provisioning and SIP-based interconnect.

What can you offer your customers with FMC?

With FMC, you can enable end users:

  • Make and receive business calls on their smartphone’s native dialer – no additional apps needed.
  • Access office telephony features – such as call transfers, voicemail, or call recording – directly from a smartphone.
  • Use the same business number across multiple devices (e.g., mobile phone, softphone, and desk phone) and stay connected whether they’re in the office, working remotely, or traveling.
  • Use their own smartphones for work without giving up privacy – ideal for companies with a BYOD (bring your own device) policy.
EXAMPLE
John uses his personal mobile phone for everyday communication. After joining ABC Company as a sales manager, he activates an eSIM with his business number. Now, he can make and receive work calls on the same device with no need for a second phone or extra apps. John can access all the advanced business features he needs, like call recording, call transfers, and even AI call analytics. When John calls clients, they see the company’s number, keeping his personal number private. With call forking enabled, incoming business calls ring on both his mobile and desk phone. Whether he’s at his desk or out of the office, he can answer calls on whichever device is most convenient.

FMC can help you:

  • Expand into the B2B market by offering customers a way to unify their mobile and business communications
  • Increase revenue per user by upselling extra services, such as call recording, advanced PBX features, or AI-powered call analytics

How it works

If you want to enable FMC, you first need to collaborate with a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) or a Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) that provides SIP interface, like Tango Networks.

When you add a new SIM (or eSIM) subscriber to PortaSwitch, the subscription is provisioned to the mobile network. The mobile network sends SIP REGISTER messages to PortaSwitch for the subscriber.

When the subscriber makes or receives a call on their mobile phone’s native dialer, the call is routed through PortaSwitch using the SIP protocol. PortaSwitch handles the call, applying any relevant PBX features (e.g., recording, voicemail).

How FMC works

How PortaSwitch enables FMC

Here’s how PortaSwitch helps you deliver FMC:

  • Switching and billing – PortaSwitch manages SIP session control and routes calls made from users’ smartphones, as well as fixed-line calls. It also handles real-time charging and balance management.
Roaming calls and data can be charged online or offline, depending on the MNO/MVNO technical capabilities.
  • Cloud PBX setup – you can enable your business customers to manage advanced telephony features – such as call queues, voicemail, and user extensions – through an easy-to-use CloudPBX Self-Care Portal.
  • PortaOne Workflows – you can use PortaOne Workflows to automate integration with the mobile network infrastructure or other business systems, such as CRM and ticketing platforms. This enables you to quickly activate new subscribers, reserve eSIMs, assign MSISDNs, and handle number portability requests. Also, PortaOne Workflows can be used for tasks such as call sentiment analysis, logging calls to CRM, and more.
