For simplicity, let’s consider a shared line (12065558966) that is configured for user A and user B on two IP phones. Line key 1 is used for that shared line on both IP phones.

Let’s see how the calls via the shared line are managed.

In this example, we use Yealink T46S. Refer to the IP phone documentation for instructions on how to use the shared line appearance feature on a specific IP phone model.

When there are no active calls via the shared line, the line key 1 is shown as “idle” on both IP phones (LED indicators are turned off).

Active call via the shared line

Say an incoming call from a client comes to 12065558966.

Both users’ IP phones show an incoming call to the shared line:

  • User A sees a blinking green LED indicator for line key 1
  • User B sees a blinking green LED indicator for line key 1

Once user A answers the call, the users’ IP phones show an active call on the shared line:

  • User A (participating in the active call) sees a solid green LED indicator for line key 1 on their phone
  • User B (not participating in the active call) sees a solid red LED indicator for line key 1 on their phone

Call barge-in

A user can join an active call that goes via the shared line, so the call becomes a three-way conference.

The barge-in feature must be supported by the IP phone.

User A is on a call via the shared line. User B sees a red solid LED for line key 1 (see Active call via the shared line).

To barge in on this call, user B:

  • Presses and holds the line key 1 button until the additional menu pops up
If user B just quickly presses line key 1, it’s a command for the IP phone to start a new call using the same shared line.
  • Selects “Barge-in” in the menu

As a result, user A, user B, and the third user are connected to the three-way conference.

The users’ IP phones show an active call on the shared line in the following way:

  • User A (participating in the active call) sees a solid green LED indicator for line key 1
  • User B (also participating in the active call) sees a solid green LED indicator for line key 1 as well

User B disconnects from the call by pressing the “End call” soft key and sees a solid red LED indicator for line key 1 showing that the line is busy as user A is still on the call.

Call supervision feature will not function if there is more than one active call via the shared line.

Call hold

Users can put a call on hold so that the call can be resumed on the same or a different IP phone.

Say user A answers a call on the shared line. To put the call on hold, user A presses the “Hold” soft key.

The users’ IP phones show that a call via the shared line is put on hold in the following way:

  • User A (who put the call on hold) sees a blinking green LED indicator for line key 1
  • User B (not participating in the call) sees a blinking red LED indicator for line key 1

  • Press “Resume” soft key
If user B continues the conversation

If user B wants to continue the conversation, they need to:

  • Press and holds the line key 1 (with a blinking red LED indicator) until the additional menu pops up
  • Press “Retrieve” soft key

After that, user A will be disconnected and the call will be established between user B and the initial caller.

Private hold

Users can put a call on private hold so that the call cannot be resumed on a different IP phone (and other users can’t barge in on the call while it’s on private hold).

Say user A is on a call via the shared line. To put the call on private hold, user A presses the “PriHold” soft key.

The users’ IP phones show a call on the private hold shared line in the following way:

  • User A (who placed the call on private hold) sees a blinking green LED indicator for line key 1
  • User B (not participating in the call) sees a solid red LED indicator for line key 1

To continue the conversation, user A needs to:

  • Press the line key 1 (with a blinking green LED indicator)
  • Press “Resume” soft key

User B cannot retrieve a call put on private hold by the other user.
