Trace session functionality is an efficient tool that allows user sessions to be traced and simplifies troubleshooting for administrators.
The key features of trace session functionality are:
- A single page for session search and display.
- Merged SIP and billing logs to provide an entire overview of the session flow.
- General information about a session in the form of a diagram between the main participants (e.g., SIP phones and PortaSwitch) with the issue description and troubleshooting instructions for the most common issues.
- The ability to switch to the advanced log view if deeper investigation is required (e.g., to review the call flow among nodes within the PortaSwitch cluster).
For instance, on a call with an administrator, John Doe (12103355787) wants to find out why he cannot register his account. The administrator opens the trace session page and searches the session using the account number and time interval. On the log viewer page, he sees that John Doe specifies incorrect account number.
This feature drastically simplifies troubleshooting and reduces the load on your administrative staff. Please refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Unified PortaSwitch handbook collection for more troubleshooting tips.
By default, the system searches for call sessions made within the last 5 minutes. You can turn off the data autoload if you don’t want all those sessions to load each time you open the Trace session panel. This saves you time, as you don’t have to wait to apply specific filtering criteria.
To find a specific session, combine the following search criteria in a single search query:
- From (CLI) – filter sessions by originating phone number (ANI number).
- To (CLD) – filter sessions by destination phone number.
- Source IP – filter sessions by the IP address of a session participant.
- Session type – filter sessions by type (calls, messages, registrations, Internet sessions, subscriptions to presence status).
- Account ID – filter sessions by specific account ID.
- Connection – filter sessions by connection.
- Time interval – filter all sessions performed within the specified time interval.
The search results appear on the Session list panel and contain the main session details – account ID, CLI, CLD, session start time, duration, connection and service type. To review a log of a specific session, click the link Show
