PortaBilling uses business models to group customers by the type of services they use. This allows for managing customers consistently in a convergent environment with multiple service types.

The business model configured for a customer determines which customer classes are available – only those with the same business model can be selected. The business model also sets the default account role for accounts created under that customer, ensuring the correct account ID format is applied from the start. For the full list of account roles mapped to each business model, see Account roles.

Example
An administrator sets up a new mobile subscriber. They first create a customer class and set the business model to Mobile, and then create a new customer using the same business model. When assigning a customer class, only customer classes with the Mobile business model are available for selection. When creating an account for this customer, the account role is automatically set to Mobile, ensuring the correct account ID format is applied without manual selection.

The following business models are available:

  • Cloud PBX
  • Internet access
  • Mobile
  • PINless
  • Prepaid cards holder
  • Residential VoIP
  • SIP trunking
  • Universal

Universal is a general-purpose model that lets you configure any service type for a customer.

Customer business model selection while creating.

Administrators configure a business model at two levels: customer class and the customer. When assigning a customer class to a customer, both must have the same business model.
