Sending notifications helps customers stay informed about their bundle usage and avoid unexpected service disruptions. It may also encourage customers who use Balance-dependent renewable or One-off with top-ups bundles to buy additional top-ups.

Notifications configured individually for each bundle item

You can configure notifications individually for each bundle item to automatically notify end users in the following cases:

  • When the used service volume reaches the specified amount, or the remaining service volume drops to the specified amount (available for all types of bundles). You can configure multiple notification thresholds per bundle item (as a comma-separated list of percentages or absolute units);
  • When the allocated service volume is depleted (available for all types of bundles);
  • In a set number of days before a specific service volume expires (available only for Balance-dependent renewable and One-off with top-ups bundle types, if expirable top-ups are configured for these bundles);
  • When the service volume expires (available only for Balance-dependent renewable and One-off with top-ups bundles, if expirable top-ups are configured for these bundles).

Specifics

  • A customer may cross multiple thresholds between two usage reports (e.g., a customer downloads a large file and crosses several thresholds within a single 30-minute interval when PortaBilling receives usage reports from the mobile network). In this case, by default, only the most recent notification is sent, and the earlier ones are skipped. To send all notifications in sequence, set the SuspendObsoletedTrigger option to No in the Configuration server web interface.
  • Multiple notification thresholds can be configured independently for peak, off-peak, and second off-peak periods within the same renewable by calendar bundle item.
  • For one-off with top-ups, all top-ups and the initial allowance share the same notification thresholds defined on the bundle item. For example, a bundle item includes 100 minutes with thresholds at 50, 20, and 0 minutes remaining. The first notification is sent when 50 minutes remain. The customer then uses 10 more minutes (40 remain) and tops up with 30 minutes – the remaining allowance becomes 70 minutes. As usage continues, the notifications are sent again in sequence: at 50 minutes remaining, then 20, then 0.
  • For balance-dependent renewable bundles, notification thresholds for top-ups are configured separately from the main allowance and are calculated against the combined total of all top-ups. For example, if a customer makes two top-ups of 30 and 40 minutes, the thresholds are calculated against the combined 70 minutes.

Bundle-level notifications

For Balance-dependent renewable bundles, you can configure sending multiple notifications N days, hours, minutes, or any combination of these (e.g., 2d 2h or 3h 20m) before the bundle expires. These notifications are sent only to the customer’s email/phone.

Notification recipients and delivery settings

If a bundle is assigned to an account, the notifications will be sent to both the account and the corresponding customer. If a bundle is assigned directly to a customer, the notifications will be sent only to the customer.

To send email notifications to your customers/accounts, ensure their email address is entered in the "Email" field on the customer’s/account’s page.

To send SMS notifications, make sure the recipient's mobile phone number is entered in the "Alt. phone" field on the customer/account pages.

If you want to notify your customers via SMS, set up your system to send SMS via PortaSIP using the SMPP protocol (this includes steps such as creating tariffs, vendors, and SMPP connections). Alternatively, you can use an external service like Twilio, which utilizes REST APIs and is available via the Add-on Mart.
EXAMPLE

A service provider, “Owl Telecom,” offers their customers a Balance-dependent renewable bundle that includes 200 minutes, 15 GB, and 200 SMS. To enhance customer experience, Owl Telecom wants to notify users about two key events:

  1. Bundle expiration: Customers are alerted 3 days before the bundle expires and again on the expiration day, ensuring they have time to top up their balance to cover the renewal fee.
  2. Low service volume: Notifications are sent when the remaining bundle volumes drop to 20 minutes, 1 GB of data, or 5 SMS, helping customers stay informed and plan accordingly, e.g., purchase a top-up.

To configure these notifications, the Owl Telecom’s admin needs to:

  • Navigate to Bundle > Configuration and for the Notify end user when option, set the following:
    • The expiration is in – specify 3d
    • Bundle expires – select the checkbox

      Balance-dependent renewable bundle configuration.

  • Navigate to Bundle > Bundle item (e.g., for Voice calls) > Notifications, and set the following options:
    • Threshold units – minutes
    • Notifications based on volume – remaining
    • Remaining main volume drops to – 20 minutes
    • Main volume is depleted – enabled (automatically adds 0 to the Remaining main volume drops to field)

    With this setting, users will be notified when they have only 20 minutes left. They will also receive a notification once the entire allocated volume is depleted.

  • Configure notifications for other bundle items in the same way as for voice calls.
